Comments

Guardamar del Segura, a small coastal municipality in Alicante province, issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War as Republican-zone commerce ground to a halt from coin hoarding and metal shortages. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities did the same between 1936 and 1938, and the Generalitat de Catalunya and other regional authorities actively encouraged it — there was no coordinated national solution, so towns printed their own.

The Gari Mon catalogue documents two varieties for this 50 céntimos issue, this being the B type. Distinguishing between them typically comes down to minor typographic or serial number differences rather than substantive design changes.
