Gisclareny is one of the smallest municipalities in Catalonia — historically fewer than a hundred inhabitants — which makes this note remarkable simply by virtue of its existence. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government's inability to maintain small-denomination coinage in circulation prompted hundreds of Catalan townships to issue their own emergency paper currency under decree. Gisclareny was among the most obscure to do so.
Printed locally at Imprenta Jaume Molins in nearby Berga, these township issues were typically produced in tiny runs and spent almost entirely within the issuing village. Survival rates are low not from destruction but from sheer scarcity at source.
