Empori is the Catalan name for the municipality of Empuriabrava — or more precisely here, for L'Escala, the coastal town adjacent to the ancient Greek colony of Emporion. During the Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities issued their own fractional currency under authority granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, filling a vacuum left by the disappearance of small-denomination coinage hoarded from circulation after 1936.
Imprenta C. Barnés in Palamós produced notes for several towns along the Costa Brava, which accounts for a family resemblance across some of the local issues from this stretch of Girona province. Turró catalogues this emission at #928.
