El Escorial de la Sierra — not to be confused with the larger El Escorial municipality — issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War as the Republican zone experienced a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage. Copper and silver had been hoarded or melted, leaving local councils across Castile scrambling to produce something, anything, that workers could use for daily transactions. These ayuntamiento-issued pieces were never intended to circulate beyond the immediate locality.
The Gari Mon catalogue documents this specific issue under #608-C, suggesting at least variant classification within the series. Surviving examples are scarce — small-town wartime paper rarely made it through the decade intact.
