Montoire-sur-le-Loir held a French depot for German officer prisoners during the First World War, and this 50 centimes note was issued by that camp's own internal administration to manage canteen purchases and small transactions among the interned population. Officer camps operated under different rules than enlisted facilities — prisoners retained certain privileges, and the circulation of scrip kept real currency out of the camp economy while still permitting a functional exchange system.
Camp-issued fractional notes from French POW depots of this period survive in small numbers. Most were redeemed or discarded at the armistice.
