Belgium's post-WWI coinage required parallel French and Dutch (Flemish) versions of nearly every denomination — a direct consequence of longstanding linguistic tensions that had already forced the state to enact formal language parity laws by 1898. The Dutch-text 50 centimes and its French counterpart circulated simultaneously, an awkward bureaucratic solution that pleased neither community entirely.
The nickel composition replaced the pre-war silver issues as Belgium, like most of Europe, struggled to reconstitute its monetary system after German occupation had stripped the country of hard-metal reserves.
