Issued as part of Hungary's ongoing "Hungarian History and Culture" gold series, this piece was struck in the year Hungary acceded to the European Union — May 1, 2004. The timing was not incidental. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank accelerated several collector issues that year, partly to assert cultural identity at the precise moment Hungary's monetary future was becoming subject to Brussels.
The mythical stag — the *csodaszarvas* — derives from the founding myth of the Magyar people, in which the brothers Hunor and Magor pursue a supernatural white stag across the Pontic steppe, ultimately leading their tribes to their new homeland.
