Bad Godesberg's 50-million Mark note dates from the most acute phase of the Weimar hyperinflation — by late 1923, the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough, and thousands of municipalities, companies, and private entities began issuing their own emergency currency under the broad category of Notgeld. This particular piece was printed by the local newspaper press, the Godesberger Volkszeitung, a thoroughly mundane solution to a catastrophic problem.
The face value, astronomical by any peacetime measure, was already losing purchasing power within days of printing. By November 1923, when the Rentenmark stabilization took effect, notes like this became worthless almost overnight.
