The denomination FIVE SHILLINGS is set in large bold letterpress at centre, flanked by serial numbers, with an ornate numeral cartouche at right; a central band below carries the value in Arabic and Hindi scripts alongside the legal tender clause. The place and date of issue, Nairobi, 1st June 1939, appear at lower centre above three facsimile signatures of Members of the East African Currency Board. |

The numeral 5 appears in square cartouches flanking the central vignette, with large corner numerals repeated at each angle of the note, while elaborate geometric guilloche rosette patterns fill the lateral fields. The denomination FIVE SHILLINGS is inscribed in rectangular panels positioned at the top and bottom of the central design. |
