| Additional information |
Somaliland's unrecognized status — declared independent from Somalia in 1991 but acknowledged by no UN member state — makes its coinage technically unofficial by international standards, yet the Bank of Somaliland has issued a consistent series regardless. These brass pieces circulate domestically without the backing of any international monetary framework.
The cheetah designation reflects Somaliland's position within one of the few remaining Horn of Africa habitats where Acinonyx jubatus survives in viable numbers, though that population has declined sharply due to the illegal pet trade — cheetah cubs are trafficked out of the region at a rate that conservationists consider functionally catastrophic.
