San Marino issued this coin to mark the United Nations' International Year of Peace, designated for 1986 but carried into commemorative programs through the following year. The republic has maintained observer status at the UN since 1977 and became a full member in 1992, making the 1987 issue something of a forward-looking gesture toward an institution San Marino had not yet formally joined.
