| Additional information |
San Marino adopted its first comprehensive declaration of human rights principles into domestic law in 1974, but the 1988 commemorative series — of which this is part — was timed to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948. The declaration passed without a single dissenting vote, though eight nations, including the Soviet Union and Saudi Arabia, abstained.
Fr#43 is the standard Friedberg reference for this type; struck at the San Marino mint under Italian technical supervision, as was customary for the republic's gold issues of this period.
