Additional information

Issued as part of Russia's ongoing "WWII 75th Anniversary" commemorative program, this piece marks the August–September 1945 Kuril Islands operation — a Soviet amphibious assault launched after Japan's formal surrender announcement, which resulted in the USSR seizing the island chain and establishing the territorial dispute with Japan that remains unresolved to this day. The landings were conducted with Japanese forces still nominally armed, and combat casualties occurred after the war had technically ended.
