Ulster Bank's interwar £5 notes were printed by Charles Skipper & East, a London firm whose Northern Ireland attribution here almost certainly refers to where the notes were delivered or issued, not where they were pressed — the company's production facilities were in London. The series ran across a period of considerable financial instability in Britain and Ireland, bracketed by the 1929 crash and the bank failures of the early 1930s, though Ulster Bank itself weathered that decade without the acute crises that struck many contemporaries.
High-denomination Irish provincial notes from this period survive in small numbers. The £5 was a significant sum in daily use, meaning most examples passed through relatively few hands before being retired.
