Obverse description At center, the Egyptian national emblem — the Eagle of Saladin with spread wings — bears a circular cartouche inscribed in Arabic with the name of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Above the eagle, the denomination '5 L.E.' is inscribed in the field, surmounted by an Olympic torch. The Hijri date ١٤١٢ and the Gregorian year 1992 appear in Arabic-Indic and Western numerals respectively at the upper periphery. The Latin legend 'THE 25th OLYMPIC GAMES 1992' curves along the lower portion of the beaded border.

Reverse description A dynamic low-relief scene depicts a competitive swimmer executing a freestyle stroke, viewed from a slightly elevated angle, with stylized waves rendered beneath the figure. A bird with outstretched wings — evoking ancient Egyptian artistic tradition — appears above and to the right of the swimmer. The Arabic legend 'برشلونة ١٩٩٢' (Barcelona 1992) curves along the upper border, while the Arabic inscription 'الدورة ٢٥ ألعاب الأولمبية' (The 25th Olympic Games) runs along the lower border. The overall design blends modern sporting imagery with traditional Egyptian artistic conventions.

Additional information

Egypt issued a series of silver 5-pound sports commemoratives through the late 1980s and into the 1990s, many timed loosely around Olympic cycles. The 1992 issue aligns with the Barcelona Games, where Egyptian athletes competed under a program substantially supported by state sports infrastructure built after Sadat's open-door economic reforms of the 1970s drew foreign investment into national institutions.

Mintages for this series were modest and primarily directed at collector markets rather than circulation. Most examples encountered today show no wear at all.
