Obverse description Blue note with a central guilloche underprint framing the denomination inscription FIVE POUNDS in bold letterpress, above which the issuer's title NATIONAL COMMERCIAL BANK OF SCOTLAND LIMITED is printed in two lines. A large stylised pound-sign vignette appears to the left, while the lower centre bears the Royal coat of arms of Scotland flanked by supporters; the date EDINBURGH, 4TH JANUARY, 1968 and the promise clause PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND are inscribed above the General Manager's manuscript signature. Serial number prefixes appear at upper right and lower left.
