Northern Bank was a Belfast-based commercial bank with the right to issue its own notes in Northern Ireland — a privilege that persisted long after note-issuing by private banks had ended elsewhere in the United Kingdom. This £5 ran across five different chief cashier signatures over sixteen years, making signature variety the primary collecting distinction within the series. The Ervin and Roberts dates are noticeably scarcer than the earlier Wilson and Gabbey issues.
