| Reverse description | Draped bust of Queen Nefertiti facing right, modeled after the celebrated polychrome limestone bust discovered at Amarna and dating to circa 1345 BCE, now housed in the Neues Museum, Berlin. The effigy is rendered in bold sculptural relief and occupies the majority of the field, depicting the queen wearing her characteristic flat-topped blue crown (khepresh) adorned with a decorative band, a broad usekh collar necklace, and a gracefully elongated neck. The mirror-polished background provides strong contrast to the finely detailed portrait. The coin is framed by a beaded inner border running along the full circumference. No legend or inscription appears on the reverse. |

Nefertiti's image had been a flashpoint in Egyptian-German relations for decades before this coin was struck. The famous painted limestone bust, excavated by a German team in 1912 and removed to Berlin under circumstances Egypt has long disputed, was the subject of active repatriation demands throughout the late 20th century. Egypt's decision to place her likeness on a commemorative silver issue in 1994 was partly a reassertion of cultural ownership over an artifact it did not physically possess.
