Egypt's mining and geological survey infrastructure expanded considerably in the 1990s under state-directed economic liberalization, with the government actively promoting investment in Sinai and Eastern Desert mineral extraction. This issue belongs to a prolific run of Egyptian commemorative pounds produced through the mid-1990s at the Cairo Mint, many of which saw minimal circulation and were largely absorbed by thematic collectors.
The .720 fineness is a deliberate holdover from earlier Egyptian silver coinage standards rather than the .925 used by most contemporary commemorative programs.
