Egypt issued a run of silver 5-pound commemoratives through the late 1980s and early 1990s tied to international sporting events, largely as foreign-currency earners rather than pieces intended for domestic circulation. Field hockey had a particular resonance: the Egyptian national team had been competing internationally since the 1920s and remains one of the oldest programs on the African continent.
Most examples from this series went directly into collector sets and saw no handling, which accounts for the near-universal gem-quality survivors on the market today.
