Reverse description The reverse features a detailed technical-style composition depicting two iconic Royal Air Force aircraft of the Second World War: a Supermarine Spitfire (coded K·O·T, serial K9765) in the upper register and a Hawker Hurricane (coded B·O·T·M, serial Z7975) in the lower register, both shown in precise profile. An aeronautical operations map of south-east England forms the background, annotated with sector names including Debden Sector, Northolt Sector, Hornchurch Sector, and Biggin Hill 111 Group, evoking the RAF's No. 11 Group fighter command network during the Battle of Britain. The prominent central legend reads 'BATTLE OF BRITAIN' with the commemorative dates '1940-2025' above, while 'SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE' and 'HAWKER HURRICANE' label the respective aircraft. The inscription '85TH ANNIVERSARY' appears in the lower field, with the denomination 'FIVE POUNDS' incused along the bottom rim.

Additional information

Guernsey occupied an unusual position during the Battle of Britain: the only British territory under German occupation for the duration of the war, its population lived under Nazi administration from June 1940 while RAF Fighter Command fought overhead. The island had been demilitarised and evacuated of many residents just before the fall. That Guernsey now issues commemoratives on this subject carries a particular irony that most issuers of similar coins cannot claim.
