The British Linen Bank, despite its name, had nothing to do with linen by 1968 — it had been a full commercial bank for over two centuries, the textile origins surviving only in the title. Founded in 1746 to finance Scotland's linen trade, it became one of the last Scottish banks to retain full note-issuing rights under its own name before being absorbed into the Bank of Scotland in 1971, after which independent British Linen issues ceased entirely.
This note was printed by De La Rue in London — a common arrangement for Scottish provincial issuers who lacked in-house production facilities. The series had only a few years of active circulation before the merger rendered it obsolete.
