The Union Bank of Scotland was absorbed into the Bank of Scotland in 1955, making this series among the last notes the institution ever issued. The timing matters: notes dated toward the end of the 1950–1954 window would have had an extremely short independent life before being recalled and replaced by Bank of Scotland paper following the merger.
Waterlow & Sons had been printing Scottish commercial banknotes for decades by this point, and their work for the Union Bank is technically competent without being exceptional. The watermark security was already considered minimal protection by the early 1950s, but Scottish private banks were slow to adopt the more sophisticated features then appearing on Bank of England issues.
