The Union Bank of Scotland Ltd. was absorbed into the Bank of Scotland in 1955, but this series predates that merger by years — issued across a span when Scottish commercial banks still maintained robust independent note-issuing operations largely unchallenged by Westminster. The five pound denomination was a workhorse of Scottish commercial life, used heavily in agricultural settlements, livestock markets, and trade accounts where the English preference for coin and smaller notes simply didn't apply.
Cotton substrate with a single watermark security feature reflects the production standards of the interwar period. Later printings in this series would have been affected by wartime paper restrictions, and subtle variations in paper weight and watermark clarity exist across the date range.
