Obverse description The obverse is printed in blue, red, and black on white paper, with a fine guilloche border framing the entire note. At centre top, a heraldic vignette shows two classical female allegorical figures flanking a shield, beneath the inscription 'INCORPORATED BY ACT OF PARLIAMENT'; the numeral '5' appears in ornate panels at the upper left and right corners. The issuer's name 'THE UNION BANK OF SCOTLAND LIMITED' is set in bold letterpress across the centre, with the promise-to-pay text below, the denomination 'FIVE POUNDS' in large letters, and a manuscript General Manager signature above the printed 'CASHIER' designation at lower centre, flanked by equestrian vignettes at the lower left and right.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in blue-green and executed entirely in dense lathe-work guilloche, forming an elaborate central medallion with the numeral '5' at its heart, surrounded by a circular legend reading 'THE UNION BANK OF SCOTLAND LIMITED'. The overall design consists of interlocking rosette and lace-pattern underprint work filling the note to its decorative scalloped border, with no pictorial vignette.
