Obverse description Printed in black intaglio on a light ground, the obverse carries the bank title THE NETHERLANDS BANK OF SOUTH AFRICA in an arc across the top, flanked by large guilloche roundels bearing the numeral 5 at each upper corner. The central vignette presents the bank's armorial device with the denomination FIVE POUNDS in bold gothic lettering below, above the promise-to-pay inscription reading PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND AT THEIR OFFICE AT PRETORIA. Signature lines for the General Manager and Managing Director appear at the foot, with the lower border panel carrying repeated denomination legends interspersed with fine lathe-work guilloche.
