Issued to mark the start of the 15th Islamic century — a calendrical milestone that fell in 1979 CE — this commemorative was struck at a moment of acute political instability in Sudan. Jaafar Nimeiry's government was attempting to consolidate legitimacy through a public pivot toward Islamic identity, a process that would culminate in the imposition of sharia law in 1983. The coin belongs to that broader ideological repositioning.
Sudan contracted foreign minting for much of its commemorative silver production during this period, as domestic capacity at the Khartoum facility was limited.
