Comments

Wildemann, a small mining town in the Harz Mountains, housed an officer-grade prisoner of war camp during the First World War. Officer prisoners under the Hague Conventions were not required to work and received pay commensurate with their rank, which created a genuine need for internal camp currency — officers had money, and the camp needed a controlled medium to manage canteen transactions without hard coin leaving the facility.

Camp-issued Lagergeld of this type was printed in tiny quantities for a single, geographically specific installation. Most was destroyed or discarded at repatriation. Survival rates are correspondingly low.
