The XVIII. Armee-Korps oversaw prisoner-of-war facilities across the Frankfurt region, and these small-denomination camp notes were issued specifically to allow POWs to make canteen purchases without handling Reichsmark currency — a deliberate policy of monetary segregation enforced across German camps from roughly 1916 onward. The notes had no value outside the wire.
Paper issues at this denomination were prone to rapid deterioration through heavy handling in confined conditions. Survivors in any respectable state are considerably less common than the higher denominations from the same inspectorate.
