Crossen an der Oder — now Krosno Odrzańskie in western Poland — hosted one of the prisoner-of-war camp complexes administered under the III. Army Corps inspection authority during the First World War. Camp scrip of this type was introduced to segregate PoW purchasing power from the civilian economy, a policy enforced across German camps by 1916 after concerns about prisoners acquiring regular Reichsmark currency. The 5 Pfennig denomination is the smallest in the series, intended for canteen use.

Ambrosius & Co. GmbH in Kirchhain, Neumark handled a number of these regional camp issues. The Waldhausen signature — identified as Der Inspekteur — has been confirmed across other III. Armeekorps scrip; his adjutant countersigned but remains unidentified in the philatelic record.
