Part of the long-running bimetallic circulation series Mexico launched in 1992, this denomination honors the priest whose 1810 Grito de Dolores set off the independence movement — though Hidalgo himself was captured and executed less than a year later, in July 1811, before seeing any of its results. The series was designed for heavy everyday use, and most pieces from the 2000s onward show rapid ring-core separation wear, making clean examples increasingly hard to find in commerce.
