The 5 Pahlavi of 1926 was struck in the first year of Reza Shah's reign, following his formal coronation in April of that year after deposing Ahmad Shah Qajar. The new dynasty needed hard currency that projected legitimacy, and these large gold multiples were as much political instruments as monetary ones — issued to signal fiscal seriousness to foreign creditors and neighboring powers still skeptical of the new order.
Fr#88 is the foundational Frenchman reference for this type, and surviving specimens in high grades are frequently ex-Iranian banking reserves rather than general circulation.
