Oscar I's currency reform proposals of the early 1850s generated a series of competing pattern strikes as the Swedish government debated replacing the older riksdaler system with a more rational decimal structure. The Type II designation distinguishes this from the earlier pattern iteration, reflecting changes made between 1853 and 1854 as the specifications were refined before any production commitment. Sweden ultimately did not adopt a full decimal coinage until the 1855–1858 reform series, making these patterns documentary evidence of the deliberation rather than its outcome.
