Tiberius II Constantine ruled for just four years after succeeding Justin II, who had descended into madness and been rendered effectively incapacitated by 574. The Catania mint — one of the westernmost Byzantine striking facilities — operated under conditions of persistent military pressure from Lombard incursions into Italy, and its output during this reign was irregular at best. MIB I#66 is among the scarcer of the Sicilian small module pieces from this period.
