Comments

German prisoner of war camps during the First World War issued their own internal currencies to control the movement of money within the wire — standard Reich marks were confiscated on arrival and exchanged for camp scrip that could only be spent at the canteen. Cassel's camp currency is among dozens of such issues, each administratively independent, which is why denominations, designs, and printing quality vary so dramatically across facilities.

The scrip was theoretically redeemable upon release, though the chaos of demobilization after November 1918 made that process unreliable at best.
