The St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral in Kyiv survived the Soviet period only through a bureaucratic accident of repurposing — converted into a House of Organ and Chamber Music in 1980, which gave authorities a preservation rationale that a functioning church would never have received. That designation almost certainly spared it from demolition during the intensified anti-religious campaigns of the late Soviet decades.
