Issued as part of Ukraine's long-running "Regions of Ukraine" bimetallic series, this piece commemorates Mykolaiv Oblast — the southern region centered on the city of Mykolaiv, founded in 1789 by Grigory Potemkin as a shipbuilding hub on the Southern Bug River. The city became one of the Black Sea Fleet's principal construction sites under Catherine II and retained that strategic importance through the Soviet period.
The series ran from 2001 through the 2010s, with individual oblasts receiving issues in no particular geographic or alphabetical sequence.
