Lviv Polytechnic traces its origins to 1844, when Austrian imperial authorities established the Lviv Technical Academy — making it one of the oldest technical institutions in Eastern Europe and the oldest in Ukraine. The 2010 commemorative marks its 165th anniversary under Ukrainian institutional reckoning, which counts from a 1844 founding date while acknowledging the school passed through Austrian, Polish, Soviet, and finally Ukrainian governance across its history.
The National Bank of Ukraine's commemorative hryvnia program, active since the mid-1990s, has produced hundreds of collector issues in this silver format. Most see minimal circulation.
