Issued to commemorate the Euromaidan protests of late 2013 into 2014, this coin appeared roughly a year after riot police attempted to violently clear Kyiv's Independence Square — an action that backfired catastrophically, swelling the crowds and ultimately driving President Yanukovych to flee to Russia in February 2014. The National Bank of Ukraine moved quickly to memorialize the uprising through circulating commemorative coinage, an unusual choice given the country was simultaneously managing currency collapse and IMF negotiations.

The hryvnia lost nearly 70% of its value against the dollar between late 2013 and mid-2015.
