Switzerland issued this coin to commemorate the centenary of the Federal Shooting Festival of 1836, not as any war-related instrument — the popular "War bond" nickname is a misnomer that has stubbornly persisted in some trade catalogs. The piece belongs to the long Swiss tradition of Schützentaler, commemorative shooting festival coins with no direct financing function.
The .835 silver standard was already being phased toward lower-fineness alloys across Europe by the mid-1930s, making this one of the later Swiss commemorative strikes at that fineness before the war years forced further reductions.
