Obverse description Seated allegorical figure of Helvetia facing right, kneeling in three-quarter view on the lower field. She holds a small bird (dove) aloft in her right hand and rests her left hand near a tall upright sword planted at her side. The figure is draped in classical robes with her hair arranged in curls. The engraver's signature M. WEBER appears in small characters at lower right of the field. The legend HELVETIA is inscribed in bold capital letters along the lower exergue.

Reverse description The reverse displays a prominent dotted rectangular frame enclosing the four-line Latin motto PRO PATRIA ARMIS TUENDA, with a Swiss cross in the upper-left corner of the frame. A military steel helmet is depicted centrally above the frame at the top of the field, flanked on either side by a sprig of oak leaves. The date 1936 is inscribed in two separated groups of numerals (19 and 36) flanking the helmet. The denomination 5 FR is boldly inscribed below the frame, with the Bern mint mark B visible at the very bottom of the field.
