Montoire-sur-le-Loir held Allied officers as prisoners of war during the First World War, and the camp's internal scrip was a practical necessity — German authorities generally prohibited POWs from handling standard French currency, forcing individual camps to issue their own token money for canteen and internal transactions. The Dépôt d'Officiers designation is significant: officer camps operated under different conditions than enlisted men's camps, typically with more structured internal economies and greater purchasing latitude under the Hague Conventions.
