Montoire-sur-le-Loir held Allied officers as prisoners of war during the First World War, and the camp's internal scrip was a practical necessity — German authorities generally prohibited POWs from handling standard French currency, forcing individual camps to issue their own token money for canteen and internal transactions. The Dépôt d'Officiers designation is significant: officer camps operated under different conditions than enlisted men's camps, typically with more structured internal economies and greater purchasing latitude under the Hague Conventions.
Pink cardboard construction is consistent with the expedient materials available to camp administrations, and the fragility of the substrate means intact survivors are genuinely uncommon.
