Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, was founded by the Dutch West India Company in 1634 and built its early prosperity largely on the transatlantic slave trade — a history the Netherlands has been formally reckoning with since King Willem-Alexander's public apology in July 2023, the same year this coin was issued. That apology, delivered in Middelburg, was the first by a sitting Dutch monarch on the subject.
The Royal Dutch Mint has produced a recurring series of regional and overseas territory issues under Willem-Alexander's reign. This piece falls within the Koninkrijksmunten — Kingdom coins — subset honoring the constituent countries of the Dutch Caribbean.
