Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Italian unification in 1861, this coin appeared during a politically charged year — the Berlusconi government's muted official celebrations reflected deep ambivalence in the north about commemorating a Risorgimento that many Lombard and Venetian politicians argued had never truly unified the country at all. The Lega Nord openly boycotted anniversary events.
The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato struck the piece under its dual mandate as both national printer and mint, a consolidation dating to 1928.
