| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field features a stylized, color-enhanced depiction of a seahorse (Hippocampus) rendered in a contemporary illustrative style, with applied polychrome coloring in shades of blue and grey highlighting the creature's body and snout. The seahorse is shown in upright profile facing left, surrounded by an underwater scene of stylized seagrass, coral, and marine vegetation rendered in relief, with additional color accents in green, blue, and purple. The legend CAVALO – MARINHO arcs along the upper rim, with PORTUGAL and the date 2021 inscribed vertically along the right field. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Portugal's seahorse coin was issued under a broader INCM conservation series drawing attention to threatened Atlantic marine species. The long-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus) inhabits seagrass beds along the Portuguese coast, habitats that have declined sharply due to coastal development and water quality degradation. The silver version shares its KM reference base with a companion copper-nickel circulation issue — the "a" suffix distinguishing the collector strike.
