Spirou and Fantasio were created by Rob-Vel (Robert Velter) in 1938, first appearing in the Belgian comics weekly Le Journal de Spirou. The series passed through multiple artists — Jijé, Franquin, and others — making it one of the most collaborative franchises in Franco-Belgian comics history. Belgium has issued several collector coins tied to its bande dessinée heritage, treating the medium as a genuine cultural export rather than a novelty.
This copper-nickel issue circulates as legal tender at face value, though it is primarily sold to collectors at a premium through the mint's subscription program.
