Portuguese Language Day, observed on July 5th, marks the date in 1290 when King Dinis I of Portugal issued a decree establishing Portuguese — then called "língua vulgar" — as the official language of the kingdom in place of Latin for legal documents. The holiday is shared across the eight member states of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), a bloc whose combined population exceeds 260 million native speakers across four continents.
