Issued to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, an agency established in 1977 as a direct outcome of the 1974 World Food Conference — itself convened in response to the catastrophic Sahel famine and global food crisis of the early 1970s. IFAD was unusual from the start: its founding capital came jointly from OECD nations and OPEC members, an arrangement born of the political leverage oil-producing states held in the post-1973 embargo environment.
The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, which serves as Italy's state mint, is headquartered in Rome — the same city as IFAD itself.
