Obverse descriptionThe nine coats of arms of the Austrian provinces surround the `5` of the face value `5 EURO`. Around the coats of arms is the inscription `REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH` (Republic of Austria). The design is directly inspired by the old Austrian 50 schilling coins.

Reverse descriptionThe former Kärntnertor Theater (`Carinthian Gate Theater` which stood next to the present Opera House until 1870). This is where Beethoven`s 9th symphony with the `Ode to Joy` was performed in public. The first notes of the melody in the symphony itself and a cameo portrait of Beethoven complete the design.
